The Biohazard Symbol

Medmentum Biohazard symbol medical waste franchise

Behold the biohazard symbol! Its almost 50 years old.

Medmentum Introduces Nationwide Franchise Oppportunities

Alice Hlavin, Medmentum’s president, indicated that “until now, the disposal of regulated medical waste, sometimes
referred to as RMW, infectious waste, or biohazardous waste, has been the domain of much larger companies. This is due to the fact that a high level of regulatory compliance imposes a steep burden for a small business to overcome. Medmentum has the capability to offset that barrier to entry in the market by providing potential franchisees with a turnkey system that develops and launches their own medical waste disposal business without the enormous upfront investment traditionally required.

The reason for this is that most small offices have such tiny amounts of hazardous waste that the EPA has made the rules slightly less stringent for these small generators

Rule number 1

No P-listed hazardous waste can ever go in a medical waste stream. The containers themselves can be disposed of in the regular waste stream ONLY if they have been triple rinsed. The rinsing agent has to be treated as hazardous waste, though. To keep things simple, keep P-listed pharma waste OUT of the medical waste stream. Here is a partial list of P-listed compounds:

Example RCRA P-Listed Waste Codes

Note: must contain cons...
